The Type Study Report analyzed three types of bridge replacements and two types for bridge superstructure.
The selected alternative was a three (3) span structure consisting of New England Bulb Tee (NEBT) concrete superstructure with concrete slab and a two column pier with column cap. The structure is designed to be built in two phases and to remain open to two lanes of traffic at all times. Permitting required for this structure as well as the adjacent boat ramp included Coast Guard, Water Quality Certificate, Army Corps of Engineers, Chapter 91 and local Conservation Commission.

ASEC Corporation was retained to provide design services for the replacement of the bridge carrying Route 1A over the Parker River in Newbury.
